Introduction to Quilting
This class will teach you the techniques of 12 different quilt blocks that will then be put in a lap size sampler quilt. This is a great class for beginners who want to go through the entire process of making a quilt or to refresh your skills. Sewing machines are available in the classroom. However, a home sewing machine is needed.
Large all purpose (not quilting thread) thread such as Guterman's or Molyneux - try to avoid cheap, dressmaker scissors, sewing pins, seam ripper - they dull over time, if needed, get a new one, two sharp pencils, large quilting safety pins about 50-100, pearl cotton - we will discuss in class - buy later, one hand sewing needle, masking tape for the end of class, batting - twin size-extra loft thickness unless you want to machine/hand quilt - don't need till end of class medium size rotary cutter, rotary cutter ruler size 5-6" wide x 24" long, rotary cutter mat - medium size.
You need 100% cotton calico type fabric (44-45" wide). The fabric should be an all over pattern without direction. You need a total of 4-5 different fabrics. When selecting, I suggest you choose a patterned calico with several colors in it that you really like. Buy 5 1/2 yards. This will be; your backing, borders and sashing. You need 2 1/2 yards background fabric that is high contrast to the first fabric selected. Finally choose 2-3 additional fabrics that complement the 5 1/2 yards of fabric. You also want to consider light, dark and medium tones as well as variety of fabric designs - for example, don't choose all polka dots. Buy 1/2 yard each of these 2-3 additional fabrics.
Check all fabric for colorfastness. Soak each fabric in a bucket of cold water. Wait one hour and then check water for bleeding. If water turns color, wring out fabric and start again. If after 2-3 soakings, you still have color in water, return fabric for refund. If no color in water, wash and dry. If questions, email scwycoff@Hotmail.com
